Locked out right now? What should you do first?

Take a breath. Most lockouts are sorted out in one short visit. Here is what to do, in order.

    1. Is anyone in danger?

If a child, a pet or anyone who needs help is stuck inside a home or a hot car, call 911 first. Then call us.

    2. Check for another way in or a spare key

Try the back door, side door and garage. Think about who has a spare: a roommate, family, your landlord or the building superintendent. Please don't climb through a window.

    3. Call dispatch at (647) 367-8113

Tell us the address, what is locked (house, condo unit, car or office) and the lock or car type if you know it. You get an arrival time on the phone.

    4. Get your ID ready

The technician will ask for photo ID with the address, or a lease or utility bill. For a car, the ownership works. If your ID is inside, we check it with you once the door is open.

    5. Agree on the price, then we open it

The technician confirms the price before starting and tries non-destructive methods first.

How much does a locksmith cost in Toronto?

It depends on the job, the lock and the parts. A simple lockout on a standard deadbolt costs less than cutting and programming a new smart key for a car. We don't post a price list, because two "lock changes" can be very different jobs.

What we do promise: there is no call-out fee, and you hear the price and agree to it before any work starts. If the technician finds something different from what was described on the phone, they tell you before doing anything else.

What affects the price of a locksmith visit
    What affects the priceWhy
The type of jobOpening a locked door, rekeying, installing new hardware and making a car key are very different amounts of work.
The lock itselfA standard Kwikset, Schlage or Weiser deadbolt is quicker to work on than a high-security cylinder like Medeco, Mul-T-Lock, Abloy or ASSA.
PartsRekeying keeps the locks you have. Replacing means new hardware. Car keys range from a plain metal key to a chip key or a push-to-start fob.
How many locksRekeying the front, back and side doors to one key is one visit, but more work than a single door.
DamageA split door frame, a broken key stuck in the cylinder or a lock someone already tried to force takes longer to sort out.

Tip: be careful with a very low "service call" price on the phone that grows once the van shows up. Ask for the full price, parts and labour included, before you agree. Not sure if you need new locks at all? Read rekey or replace your locks.

How do you know you're calling a real locksmith?

Toronto has its share of fake locksmith ads: call centres with no local technicians that quote low and charge high. These five checks work on any call, including a call to us.

    • The phone is answered with a business name. Ask who you're speaking to and who is coming. A vague "locksmith service" is a warning sign.

    • You get a clear price before work starts. Not just a low "service call from" figure. Ask what the total will be for your job.

    • They ask for your ID. A real locksmith wants proof you live there or own the car before opening it.

    • They try to open the lock without damage first. Most standard house and car locks don't need drilling for a simple lockout.

    • You get a written invoice. It should show the business name, the work done and the total you paid.

    Questions Toronto callers ask us

Straight answers about lockouts, prices, ID checks and keys.

Can you open my door without damaging the lock?

Usually, yes. Most standard house and condo locks, like Kwikset, Schlage and Weiser deadbolts, can be picked or bypassed without damage. Drilling is a last resort for things like a broken lock or some high-security cylinders, and the technician explains why and confirms the price before doing it.

Do you charge a call-out fee in Toronto?

No. There is no call-out fee for coming to you. The technician confirms the price for the work on site, and nothing starts until you agree to it.

How fast can a locksmith get to me?

Most calls in Toronto get a technician on site in about 15-30 minutes. Rush hour, snowstorms and late-night highway closures can add time, and dispatch will tell you a realistic ETA on the phone.

What ID do I need before you open my home or car?

Photo ID that shows the address, like a driver's licence, works best. If your ID has an old address, a lease, a utility bill or a letter from building management helps. For a car, have the ownership or registration. If your ID is locked inside, we open the door and check it with you before we leave.

Can you make a car key if I've lost every key?

For many cars, yes. We can cut and program a new key or fob at the car, so it doesn't need a tow. Some newer European models use dealer-only immobilizer systems, and if yours is one of them we tell you on the phone so you don't pay for a wasted visit. Have the year, make, model and VIN ready when you call. More on car key replacement.

Should I rekey or change the locks after moving into a new place?

If the locks work well and you like them, rekeying is usually enough. It makes the old keys useless and costs less than new hardware. Replace them if they are worn or damaged, or if you want a stronger deadbolt or a smart lock. In a condo you control your unit door, but the building controls common-area locks and fobs. Tenants in Ontario generally need the landlord's consent before changing a lock. See rekey vs replace.
