Lock Rekeying in Toronto

Rekeying changes the pins inside your lock so the old keys stop working and a new key takes over, without replacing the hardware. We rekey house, condo and rental locks across Toronto, and can set every door to one key. Call (647) 367-8113 after a move, a lost key or a tenant changeover.

What does rekeying a lock actually do?

Inside most house locks is a row of small pins of different lengths. Your key lifts them to exactly the right height so the cylinder can turn. When we rekey, we take the cylinder out, replace those pins with a new set, and cut keys to match. The lock looks and works the same. Only the key changes.

It works on almost every standard pin-tumbler lock in Toronto homes, including Schlage, Kwikset, Weiser and Yale deadbolts, knobs and handlesets. Kwikset SmartKey locks rekey differently, but we handle those too.

High-security cylinders like Medeco, Mul-T-Lock or Abloy use restricted keys. Rekeying them can need the original key card or the dealer who set up the system. Tell us the brand when you call and we'll say if it's something we can do.

Should I rekey my locks after moving into a new home?

Yes. You have no way of knowing who still has a key. Previous owners, their family, a dog walker, a contractor, a neighbour who watered the plants, or a key that sat in a realtor's lockbox for weeks. Rekeying costs less than new locks and closes all of that off on day one.

Don't forget the doors people miss:

    • Side and back doors
    • The door from the garage into the house
    • A separate basement apartment entrance
    • The shed or garage side door

In a condo, we rekey your suite door. Your fob, mailbox key and any storage locker key run through management, so ask the property manager about those.

Rekey or replace: which one makes sense?

If your locks work well and you like them, rekeying is the cheaper way to cut off old keys. Replace them when the hardware itself is the problem.

What should Toronto landlords do with locks between tenants?

Rekey after the old tenant hands back the keys and before the new one moves in. You can't know how many copies were made during the tenancy, and the new tenant should get the only working keys. Under Ontario's rental rules, a landlord who changes the locks during a tenancy has to give the tenant a new key, so plan any mid-tenancy change carefully.

For houses split into units, think in layers: one key for the shared front door, a different key for each unit, and maybe a key for the landlord that opens everything. That's a small master key setup. Our property manager page explains how we handle multi-unit buildings.

Count the keys you hand over and write the number on the lease or move-in sheet. At move-out, you know exactly how many should come back, and whether you need to rekey right away.

I lost my keys. Do I need to rekey?

It depends on whether someone could match the keys to your door:

    • Rekey right away if the keys were with your ID, mail, a tagged key ring, or in a stolen bag or car. Anyone holding them could find your address.
    • Probably fine without if a single key fell into a snowbank or the lake and nothing linked it to your home. Getting a spare cut may be enough.
    • Check lost and found first if you lost them on the TTC or in a store. Keys often turn up within a few days.

If you're locked out because of the lost keys, we can open the door and rekey in the same visit.

    What happens when you call?

    1. Count the doors

Tell us how many locks, the brands if you can see them, and whether you want them all on one key.

    2. Confirm the price

Dispatch gives you a price based on the number of cylinders and books a time that works.

    3. Rekey on-site

We pull each cylinder, swap the pins and cut new keys on the spot. The old keys stop working right away.

    4. Test every door

We try each new key in every lock with the door closed, hand over the keys and tell you how many were cut.

    Lock Rekeying: common questions

Straight answers to what people ask us on the phone.

Can you rekey a smart lock?

If it has a key cylinder, usually yes. Models like Schlage Encode and many Kwikset and Yale smart locks have a standard cylinder we can rekey to match your other doors. Fully keyless models have nothing to rekey, so you change the codes in the app instead.

Can you make my front, back and garage doors work on one key?

Yes, if the locks share a keyway, which is easiest when they're the same brand. If one lock is a different brand, we may suggest swapping its cylinder or the whole lock so everything matches.

Does rekeying make my locks more secure?

It changes who can get in, not how strong the lock is. A worn, basic lock is still a worn, basic lock after rekeying. If you want better protection, look at a heavier deadbolt and frame reinforcement.

Do I need to be the owner to get my locks rekeyed?

We need to see that you live there, like ID with the address, a purchase agreement or a lease. Tenants in Ontario should get the landlord's consent before rekeying their unit.

How long does it take to rekey a house?

Not long. Each cylinder is a quick job once we're on-site, so a house with a front, back and side door is usually a short visit. Locks that are seized or a different brand can add time, and we'll tell you if that happens.
