What can a motorcycle locksmith help with?
Bikes don't get locked out the way cars do. The calls are about keys and the small locks around the bike:
- Lost or broken keys, including the only key
- Worn keys that only work on the second or third try
- Ignitions that are stiff, stuck or won't turn
- Fork (steering) locks that won't release
- Seat, fuel cap, helmet lock, saddlebag and top box locks
- Gas scooters and mopeds, which use the same kinds of keys
On most bikes, one key works the ignition, fork lock, seat and gas cap. That's handy until you lose it, because the new key has to work all of them. We cut it to the original code so it does.
Can you make a motorcycle key if I lost the only one?
Yes, for most bikes. We work out the cut from the key code or by reading one of the bike's locks, then cut a key that fits all of them.
Have your ownership (vehicle permit) and photo ID ready. The bike needs to be there, so if it's in a building garage or a storage unit, make sure we can get to it.
If the bike has an immobilizer and every key is gone, it's harder. On some models the immobilizer can be reset with the right tool. On others, losing every key means the dealer has to reset or replace the immobilizer unit. Tell us the year, make and model and we'll say which before anyone drives out.

Call (647) 367-8113Does my motorcycle have a chip key?
| What you ride | Key type | What a new key needs |
|---|---|---|
| Older bikes and many small scooters | Plain metal key | Cutting only |
| Some newer Honda, Yamaha, Kawasaki and Suzuki models | Key with a transponder chip in the head | Cutting plus programming or cloning the chip. See transponder key programming. |
| Many recent Harley-Davidson, BMW and Ducati models | Keyless fob, sometimes with a separate key for the locks | A matching fob, often programmed by the dealer |
One clue: some bikes, Yamaha being a common one, came with a red key along with the regular black ones. The red key is used to register new keys, so keep it at home and don't ride with it.
What do I do if my fork lock or ignition is stuck?
Try this first: with the key in, move the handlebars a little left and right while you turn the key gently. A fork lock under pressure from the bars won't release until the pressure comes off.
Still stuck? Make sure it's the right key, then try your spare. If the spare works, your main key is worn. If nothing works, stop before you snap a key. Bike ignitions sit out in rain and road salt, so they wear and corrode faster than a car's, and forcing one usually breaks the key. If that already happened, see broken key extraction.
Before you store the bike for winter, put a little dry lock lubricant in the ignition, seat and fuel cap locks, and make sure you have two working keys. A missing key is a bad surprise on the first warm day in April.
How much does a motorcycle locksmith cost in Toronto?
It depends on the bike and the job. You'll get the price on the phone and it's confirmed before work starts, with no call-out fee. What changes it:
- Plain key vs chip key or keyless fob
- Whether you still have a working key to copy
- How many locks the new key has to fit
- Whether an ignition or lock needs repair or replacing
- Time of day
